Sunday 01 May

Arrive in Adelaide, transfer and settle into the downtown Hotel.  Enjoy an evening drink and tour briefing with our Guide followed by a diner out with fellow guests.

Monday 02 May

We drive north though South Australia’s agricultural districts to the small township of Wilmington on the footsteps of Mount Remarkable National Park. Our walk today is the Alligator Gorge Ring Route, one of the Flinders’ regions best kept secrets and part of the Heysen Trail.  3km

Tuesday 03 May

Today we walk section 57 of the famous, 1200km Heysen Trail. Beginning at scenic Black Gap Lookout, the trail takes us north-east to Bridle Gap. From here we have views across the expansive Wilpena Pound, and back towards the Elder Range.   14km

Wednesday 03 May

This morning, we have our own private cultural tour with a local business to learn about Indigenous culture. During this tour, we visit Sacred Canyon, an area of great cultural significance to the Adnyamthanha people, where access is only allowed when accompanied by an Aboriginal guide. In the afternoon, we hike one of the best short walks in the Flinders Ranges: Mount Ohlssen Bagge. Mount Ohlssen Bagge offers arguably the best view over Wilpena Pound and the surrounding mountain ranges.  7km

Thursday 04 May

The Tanderra Saddle Walk begins on the outer edges of Wilpena Pound through Sheoaks and Grass Trees. Starting from Wilpena, we trek along the ‘Outside Trail’ which skirts around the foothills of Wilpena Pound’s northern edge. As we ascend to the top of the saddle, our reward awaits us: utterly unbeatable views in all directions of the Central Flinders Ranges, Aroona Valley, and the salt plains to the west.   12km

Friday 05 May

Today we walk the official final leg of the Heysen Trail – section 61. After breakfast we leave Willow Springs and transfer north through Brachina Gorge to the Aroona Valley. The bus drops us off in the middle of the wilderness at Aroona Hut and we set off for a full day on the trail, walking along the valley between ABC Range and Heysen Range.  17km

Saturday 06 May

After indulging in an early breakfast, we embark on a southbound journey, pausing for our final hike. Our destination is the captivating Arkaroo Rock, where we’ll traverse a brief circuit to immerse ourselves in the mesmerising Indigenous rock art sites.  3km

Monday 08 May

A free Morning.

This afternoon you will be picked up in Adelaide and driven to your accommodation in the Barossa Valley. You are free to relax and explore the area this afternoon. Overnight in Angaston.

Tuesday 09 May

This morning the cycling begins from Angaston. From Angaston it is a leisurely day of cycling through some of the very best South Australian wine country. You’ll cycle along country roads lined with vineyards and you’ll come across both the larger well known wineries such as Yalumba and Penfolds.  The cycle  passes through the township of Nuriootpa before heading back to Angaston along a section of the Barossa Valley Trail. Ascent 375m. Descent 375m.  Cycle 38kms   Overnight Angaston.

Wednesday 10 May

You traverse this acclaimed wine region from east to west cycling the full length of the Barossa Trail from Angaston to Gawler just to the north of Adelaide. The trail follows sections of the old Gawler Angaston Rail line as well as purpose built cycle trails. From Gawler you will be transferred back to your Adelaide Hotel. Ascent: 196m Descent: 451m Cycle 41kms

Friday 12 May

We drive two hours south through the picturesque Fleurieu Peninsula to the small township of Cape Jervis. Our ferry from Cape Jervis is booked for the morning and the crossing to Kangaroo Island takes approximately 60 minutes. On arrival we’ll make our way to the the Flinders Chase National Park and commence our walk along the Wilderness Trail.

We start at Rocky River  in dense eucalypt woodland, home to a diversity of bird life and native animals. Reaching the Pardalote Lookout you will see the meandering Rocky River far below you as it flows out towards the Southern Ocean.  Traversing our way down from the ridge towards the river we come across the spectacular sight of the Rocky River Cascades. Overnight Cup Gum Campground.  Hike – 12km | Walking Time: 3-5 hours

Saturday 13 May

Our hike today takes us along the Rocky River towards its mouth at the coast. We are rewarded with views of the deep blue sea of the mighty Southern Ocean. The trail then cuts south along the island’s wild and rugged coastline where birds of prey  and bottle-nosed dolphins are often spotted. From Maupertuis Bay we head down onto the bone white beach below. Winding our way to the famous Cape du Couedic Lighthouse that sits atop the headland. We turn back inland for the final stretch to camp. Tucked away in a swale, the Hakea Campground offers protection from the coastal winds and you can relax with the sound of crashing waves on the nearby cliffs.  Hike -14km | Walking Time: 4-6 hours

Saturday 14 May

Today we do an optional side trip off the wilderness trail to view the popular sites of historic Weirs Cove, Cape du Couedic lighthouse and Admirals Arch. Australian long-nosed fur seals and Australian sea-lions visit this section of the coast so we may have the opportunity to view their enchanting antics. Back on the Wilderness Trail the track heads east towards Sanderson Bay before breaking out to the famed Remarkable Rocks.  At the end of day we’ll arrive at Banksia Campground, located in a sheltered area close to Sanderson Bay, where we can drop our bags and take a short walk down to the small secluded beach to cool our tired feet. Hike – 13km | Walking Time: 3-5 hours

Saturday 15 May

Today presents coastal trekking at its best, with massive swells, towering cliffs and extended views along the coast all the way from Sanderson Bay to the spectacular Cape Younghusband.  As the trail turns inland and we head towards Hanson Bay we’ll notice a dramatic change in vegetation from low coastal heath to tall, dense mallee and tea tree. Reaching the South West River we use a punt to cross the river which marks the gateway to the Cape Bouguer Wilderness Protection Area and the most untouched area on the trail. This afternoon we will visit Seal Bay,one of the most exceptional nature-based experiences in the world. Home to an Australian sea lion population for thousands of years,  we will be taken into the heart of the colony on a private guided tour. Overnight at Tea Tree Camp where at sunrise and sunset you will encounter Kangaroo Island kangaroos as they emerge to fed on the open grassland. Hike – 13.5km | Walking Time: 3-5 hours

Saturday 16 May

The final day’s walk is spectacular and beautiful. From recovering woodlands to freshwater lakes and ‘karst’ cave systems. Upon reaching Grassdale Lagoons, we’ll be rewarded with sightings of local and visiting woodland and wading birds. The trail concludes at the amazing Kelly Hill Caves. Transfer to the Penneshaw for final lunch and ferry back to the mainland. Transfer to  Adelaide Hotel. Hike – 7.5km | Walking Time: 2-3 hours

Leisurely morning before transfer to the airport for homebound flights.
